This morning was one of those mornings where everything seemed to go wrong.
I drove to the car rental place to drop off my car thinking I'd see a gas station on the way. I was told there would be one and remembered seeing it. My GPS must have taken me another way because I never saw it. Tight for time I found out where the station was and rushed out to top off. I was in the shuttle heading to check-in with about an hour till takeoff.
When I checked in they said I was one of two people in a similar situation. We checked in for a flight that had left hours before. I apparently didn't get word about this change even though I'd received notifications about other flight changes and even had to call in about one of them. They had another flight going out a couple hours later, but since I'd set up my flight through another airline I had to talk to them about a change. For whatever reason they had to get me on a later flight that was getting me in three hours later than originally planned.
Then when I went to check in again it turned out my baggage was overweight. Not a problem when I flew out to New Zealand but apparently now it was. Had something to do with it not being connected to my flight in or back home. This was just taking me to Australia. So there'd be a $200 charge. They then weighed my carry-on and said I'd have to lose some of that as well. So to the trashcan I went. I added a few things to the air mattress and toiletries others had already dumped off. I also grabbed a bit to eat consuming some of the things I'd planned to be done with at lunch anyway. The lady at the counter told me cameras and laptops didn't count towards the limit, something the previous person hadn't mentioned. So I got the charge down to $150 reminding myself this was in NZ dollars so not as bad as it could be.
I then needed to connect with the car rental place letting them know I'd be arriving after hours. And the house I was renting, I hadn't heard how I could pick up the keys from the owner yet. Moments before boarding I was able to hear back from the owner and had made the necessary arrangements with the car rental company, so was all set.
My seat situation made up for my morning's craziness. The way the rows were designed I didn't have a seat in front of mine, so I was able to stretch out my legs the entire time.
After a three-hour flight I arrived in Melbourne, Australia. I picked up my car with no problem and got settled in the house. Great view! That's why I picked this place. I grabbed a late night bite to eat at "Hungry Jacks" (Burger King), then walked around for a bit. I'm in Australia!
