Along with Chamonix, this was a place I've wanted to visit since I first saw pictures of it many years ago. Beyond the history and picturesque old town, I loved the well-maintained public areas and sense of community there.
I've wanted to go to Chamonix (and my next two locations) ever since I saw pictures of it about a decade or more ago. It was as scenic and awesome as I had hoped! The cable car ride was a little nerve-wracking Want good luck? Apparently, this is how you do it. (The bull of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II) I thought Venice would have more canals. There were lots, but I guess I pictured canals on practically every block. Not the case. And I had heard that Venetian canals smelled bad. I didn't experience that at all. What I experienced was really good food, lots of people, and plenty of places to explore. I saw this guy doing his thing in two different populated areas. You have to be super careful with these guys! A Venetian emergency vehicle San Marino, San Marino: I think I found photographer’s heaven. I visited the super small country of San Marino because of an Airbnb unit there. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it, and decided I’d only go to San Marino if it was still available when I was ready to book. Fortunately, it was. Well, I had to shift my stay there back one day, but well worth it! This may have been the most photogenic weekend of my life. Between the castle-y architecture, the high elevation, and fog, it was a sight for the eyes. I was intrigued the whole time I was there. And walking around exploring this walled city at night was just as interesting (and super safe). I love a room with a view - and the sound of bells (turn on your sound) You can see where the fog comes up the cliff and disappears into the air ![]() San Marino has two main leaders - two "Captains Regent." I was told this was the two of them but the guard (see next pic) said one of them has to remain in the room at all times, so both wouldn't be out on the balcony at the same time. I've Googled images of both of them and am not sure what to think. Maybe the guy is the leader, but the woman doesn't look like the other leader A town made famous by a tower that leans. But the lean has been stopped, and even reversed a little, and the tower now has at least several hundred more years before they say it would ever fall. ![]() I noticed that the wear on the steps tended to veer towards the direction of the tilt as the steps wound around. On the leaning side, the wear was more on the right side of the step. As the stairs wound around, the wear veered left. Then back to the right. I'd love to see something where each step is photographed horizontally, and then all pics are shown consecutively split seconds apart. Stairwell that wound around the inside of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I think the darker band on the wall is years and years of people putting their hands on the wall to steady themselves
Great food, great views, new friends and old - Florence, Italy in 21 pictures and 2 videos I love the sound of tower bells (make sure your sound is on) While the view from the Florence unit will be one of my most spectacular of the trip, the view and stay at Villa Aurora College will likely be the most peaceful Orvieto, Italy. I had two unexpected days to make arrangements for. I planned to use the time to get some stuff done online and so was tempted to pick somewhere boring as I needed to be productive. I ended up in Orvieto instead. It was an impressive place and I didn’t get as much done as I had hoped because of it. From my half day in Assisi, Italy, the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi. Part of the medieval festival that was going on the day I arrived
