On Thursday I took a walk down the road to “The Lodge” - the Australian Prime Minister's house. This house is a little more approachable then what I'm used to in the U.S. - the "White House" fortress. Still secured but not like in the States. He wasn't living there at the time as it was being remodeled. My 2 or 3 minute walk to "The Lodge" took me past the gated ambassador's house with its armed guard pacing around near the gate. We exchanged greetings as I continued down the sidewalk and around the corner to where I could see the prime minister's residence a few houses down at the end of the road. It amazed me that I was staying so close to it. And the feel of the house makes it feel like just another house in the neighborhood, just with bigger walls. Apparently you could see "The Lodge" from the backyard of the house I stayed at.
After checking it out and walking around the perimeter I drove over to the Australian War Memorial, then back over to Manuka for lunch. I stopped into a clothing store that I’d been impressed with, then left town and headed to my next stop.
I stayed at a campground in Goulburn (place that made news for having millions of spiders rain down on it in May) that was a bit closer to Sydney, but not too far from Canberra as I knew I'd be leaving that area later in the day. The campground is not the best, despite good reviews, but they all look the same from inside my tent. I did see an awesome sunset from the campsite, though. That was cool.
